How Ashokans Rebuilt Their Campus…In Minecraft!

If you’re a student at Ashoka University, chances are you’ve heard of the virtual campus on Minecraft. What started as a casual conversation between a group of friends turned into a months-long project that brought the Ashoka community closer together during the pandemic.

For those unfamiliar with Minecraft, it’s a popular video game that allows players to build and explore virtual worlds using blocks of different materials. The students who worked on the project decided to recreate the entire Ashoka campus, including buildings, gardens, and even the iconic Peepal tree.

Building the virtual campus was no small feat — it took the students several months to complete, with each person taking on a different area of the campus. They used Google Earth and photographs of the campus to ensure accuracy and even created a virtual version of themselves to walk around the virtual space.

But building the virtual campus wasn’t just about accuracy — it was also about having fun and bringing the Ashoka community together. The students would often gather in the virtual space to chat and explore, and even hosted a virtual graduation celebration.

One of the most exciting moments of the project was when they finally unveiled the virtual campus to the rest of the Ashoka community. They hosted a virtual tour, and students, faculty, and staff were able to explore the virtual space and see their campus in a whole new way.

Building the virtual campus on Minecraft was a fun and creative way for Ashoka students to stay connected during the pandemic. It allowed them to showcase their creativity and develop new skills, all while bringing the Ashoka community closer together. Who knows, maybe someday the virtual campus will become just as iconic as the real one!
